As a sector, we are acutely aware of challenges of achieving inclusion. This session used the latest research from long term monitoring of engagement with the natural world and then drew inspiration from effective programmes that use mainstream themes to engage diverse audiences.

Dr Rose O’Neill

Dr Rose O’Neill is Natural England’s Principal Specialist for People and the Environment. Rose leads social science in Natural England, and specialises in behaviour change. Rose has oversight of Natural England’s Monitor of Engagement with the Natural Environment, the largest and longest running survey of public attitudes and experiences with nature. Prior to joining Natural England, Rose worked in local government promoting and managing recycling schemes, and more latterly at WWF where she led the rivers programme, which included campaigning, policy advocacy and working with companies to make the make the connection between water use and rivers.

Rose has a PhD in environmental science studying public participation in pro-environmental behaviours and a Masters in geology. Rose is a trustee of Wessex Rivers Trust and a non-exec director of Waterwise, the water efficiency NGO.

Peter Morris


Peter Morris is Head of Public Relations & Communications at Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT). He promotes the benefits of wetland habitats to wildlife and people in the UK and globally, including water quality and flood control. Environmental communications is his third career. Previously Peter spent 13 years as a radio journalist at the BBC. Then eight years as a Government communicator, writing messaging for the Attorney General, Justice and Home Secretaries. Peter says he specialises in future strategic communication planning which takes a lot of thinking, and old fashioned opportunistic news hits which take as little thinking as possible!
